How to add a server icon to your Minecraft server

Add a custom 64x64 server-icon.png so your Minecraft server shows a picture in the multiplayer list.

Updated · 1 min read

To give your server a picture in the multiplayer list, upload a 64 by 64 pixel PNG named server-icon.png to the root folder of your server and restart it.

Requirements

RequirementValue
File nameserver-icon.png (all lowercase)
FormatPNG
SizeExactly 64 x 64 pixels
LocationServer root folder, next to server.properties

If the image is not exactly 64 by 64, the server ignores it and you will see an error in the console when it starts.

Make the image

  1. Start with a square image, ideally something simple that is readable when tiny, like a logo or a block.
  2. Resize it to 64 x 64 pixels in any image editor. Free web-based editors work fine.
  3. Export or save it as PNG, not JPG. Renaming a .jpg file to .png does not convert it.
  4. Name the file server-icon.png.

Transparency is supported, so a logo with a transparent background looks clean in the list.

Upload it

  1. Open your server in the Schokr console and go to the file manager.
  2. Make sure you are in the root folder (where server.properties and eula.txt are).
  3. Upload server-icon.png.
  4. Restart the server. The icon is only read at startup.
  5. In Minecraft, refresh the multiplayer list.

Icon not showing?

  • Wrong size. Check the image is exactly 64 x 64. The console may show an error about the icon dimensions on startup.
  • Wrong name. Check for a double extension such as server-icon.png.png, or capital letters.
  • Wrong folder. It must be in the root folder, not inside world or plugins.
  • Not a real PNG. Re-export the image as PNG.
  • Cached list. Remove the server from your list and add it again.

On Paper, some MOTD plugins can also set the icon. If one is installed, its settings may override server-icon.png.
