Which Schokr server location should I choose?

Schokr has locations in North America, Europe and Asia. Pick the one closest to your players or the service your bot talks to.

Choose the location closest to the people who will connect to your server. For a Discord bot or app, latency to users matters less, so any nearby location works well.

How to decide

Game servers

Ping matters most for games. Every extra thousand kilometers between a player and the server adds delay, which shows up as rubber-banding, hit registration issues or block lag.

  • Players mostly in the US East or Canada East: New York
  • Players on the US West Coast: Los Angeles or San Francisco
  • Players spread across the whole US: a central-ish compromise is hard, so pick the coast where most players are
  • UK, Ireland, Western Europe: London
  • Central and Eastern Europe, Germany, Nordics: Frankfurt
  • Southeast Asia, Australia, India: Singapore
  • Japan, Korea: Tokyo

If your group is split between North America and Europe, New York or London are usually the fairest middle ground for both sides.

Voice servers

TeamSpeak 3 and Mumble are sensitive to latency as well. Use the same rule as games: closest to most of your users.

Discord bots

Bots talk to Discord's API and gateway, not directly to users, so location matters much less. Any location will feel fine for commands. If your bot streams audio to voice channels, a location near the voice region your guild uses can help a little.

Apps and APIs

For a web app or API, pick the location nearest your users. If it talks a lot to an external database or API, being close to that service often matters more.

Can I change location later?

Pick carefully, because moving a server is not a simple setting. The reliable way to move is:

  1. Take a snapshot or download the files you need with the file manager, for example by archiving the world folder.
  2. Create a new server with the same template in the new location.
  3. Upload and unarchive your files on the new server.
  4. Check everything works, then delete the old server.

Your connect address changes when you move, so tell your players or update your DNS records.

Test before committing

If you are unsure, ask a few players to ping the address after creating the server. You can also check status.schokr.gg to see the state of each location.
