How to take and restore a snapshot on Schokr

Take a snapshot of your Schokr server before risky changes and restore it to roll back. Covers the 3 free slots and buying more.

Updated · 2 min read

A snapshot is a saved copy of your server you can roll back to. Take one before updates or big changes, and restore it if something breaks. Each server has 3 snapshot slots for free.

Take a snapshot

  1. Open your server in the console.
  2. For game servers, save the world first. On Minecraft, run save-all in the console, or stop the server for the most consistent copy.
  3. Go to the Snapshots section.
  4. Create a snapshot. Give it a clear name if you can, like "Before 1.21 update".
  5. Wait until it shows as complete before making your changes.

Restore a snapshot

  1. Stop the server.
  2. Go to the Snapshots section.
  3. Pick the snapshot you want to go back to and restore it.
  4. Wait for the restore to finish.
  5. Start the server and check that everything is as expected.

Restoring replaces the current files with the snapshot's copy. Anything that changed since the snapshot was taken is lost. If you might want the current state later, take a new snapshot of it before restoring (you may need to free a slot first).

When all slots are full, delete an old snapshot or buy another slot before taking a new one. Buying slots needs credits, which need a linked Discord account.

Automatic snapshots

You can have Schokr take a snapshot every day for 5 credits per day. See automatic daily snapshots.

Tips

  • Name snapshots by purpose. "Before plugin cleanup" is easier to find later than a date.
  • Keep one known-good snapshot. Do not let every slot fill up with snapshots taken after something broke.
  • Snapshots before updates are cheap insurance. A failed Minecraft or mod update is the most common reason people need one.
  • Keep your own copy too. For important worlds, also download an archive now and then with the file manager.

Troubleshooting

  • Cannot create a snapshot: check that you have a free slot and that your role has the snapshots permission.
  • Server is broken after restoring: make sure you restored the right snapshot, and that Startup settings (like the version) match what the server used when the snapshot was taken.
