How to choose the right server template on Schokr

Schokr templates (eggs) decide what software your server runs. Compare the Minecraft, game, voice and Node.js, Bun and Python templates.

Updated · 2 min read

A template, also called an egg, tells Schokr what to install and how to start your server. Pick the template that matches the software you want to run. Schokr is built on Pterodactyl, so if you have used a Pterodactyl panel before, templates work the same way.

Minecraft Java: which one?

  • Paper: the best choice for most servers. Fast, supports Bukkit and Spigot plugins. Use it for survival, SMP and minigame servers.
  • Forge: for modded servers that use Forge mods. Mods must match the Minecraft and Forge version, and players need the same mods installed.
  • Vanilla: the official server with no plugins or mods.
  • Sponge: for plugins written for the Sponge API.
  • BungeeCord: a proxy that links several Minecraft servers together. You need at least one backend server too, so it uses two or more of your server slots.

Bots and apps: Node.js, Bun or Python

  • Node.js: for JavaScript or TypeScript projects, such as discord.js bots, Express APIs or web apps. See nodejs.org.
  • Bun: a fast JavaScript runtime that runs most Node.js code and TypeScript directly. See bun.sh.
  • Python: for discord.py bots, Flask or FastAPI apps and scripts. See docs.python.org.

These templates give you a runtime. You upload your own code with the file manager and tell the server which file to run in its Startup settings. See startup settings and variables.

Other games and voice

  • Rust, ARK, Garry's Mod, TF2, CS:GO: these download large game files on install. Give them plenty of disk and some patience on first install.
  • Custom Source Engine game: for Source games without a dedicated template. You set the game's ID and details in Startup settings.
  • TeamSpeak 3 and Mumble: lightweight voice servers. Usually need very little memory.

Things that are not available

  • There is no Bedrock Dedicated Server template.
  • There is no built-in MySQL database per server. Use a file-based database such as SQLite or H2, or an external database provider.
  • Virtual machines (Linux containers, plus Windows and macOS desktops over RDP) are coming soon.

Can I change the template later?

Templates define the install and startup process, so changing one usually means creating a new server. A clean approach:

  1. Archive and download any files you want to keep, or take a snapshot.
  2. Create a new server with the new template.
  3. Upload your files, then delete the old server to free its resources.

Within one template, many options (like versions) can be changed in Startup settings without starting over.
