Geyser version compatibility: Bedrock client and Java server

Which Bedrock and Java versions work with Geyser, why you see 'Outdated server', and how ViaVersion helps if your Paper server is older.

Updated · 2 min read

Geyser supports recent Bedrock versions and the latest Java Edition release. When Bedrock updates, players' devices often update automatically, and an old Geyser build will refuse them with "Outdated server". Keeping Geyser updated fixes most version problems.

Two sides to match

Geyser sits between two games, so there are two version questions:

SideWhat must match
Bedrock client to GeyserThe player's Bedrock version must be one your Geyser build supports
Geyser to Java serverGeyser speaks the latest Java protocol it supports to your server

Bedrock side: keep Geyser current

Bedrock updates frequently and consoles and phones usually auto-update. Each Bedrock update can change the protocol, and Geyser releases support for it, often within days.

  • "Outdated server" on the Bedrock client means the player's game is newer than your Geyser supports. Update Geyser.
  • "Outdated client" means the player's game is too old. They should update Minecraft.

Run geyser version in your console to see your build and whether a newer one exists. See update Geyser and Floodgate.

Geyser usually supports a range of recent Bedrock versions at once, so slightly older clients keep working for a while. The exact list is on the GeyserMC download page and in the console when Geyser starts.

Java side: run a current Paper version

Geyser is built for the current Java release. The simplest setup is a Paper server on the latest Minecraft version Geyser supports.

If you need an older Java version, for example because a plugin has not updated:

  1. Install ViaVersion on the Paper server. It lets newer clients, including Geyser, connect to an older server.
  2. Very old servers may also need ViaBackwards and ViaRewind depending on the gap; ViaVersion's own docs explain which you need.

ViaVersion is not needed when your server runs the version Geyser targets.

After a Minecraft update

When a new major Java version comes out, update in this order:

  1. Take a backup or snapshot of the server.
  2. Update Paper to the new version through your server's Startup settings or by replacing the jar.
  3. Update Geyser and Floodgate to builds that support it.
  4. Check your other plugins are compatible.

Bedrock-only updates usually need just a Geyser update.

Signs of a version problem

  • Bedrock players see "Outdated server" or "Outdated client".
  • Geyser logs a protocol or version error at startup or on join.
  • Bedrock players get disconnected right after the loading screen while Java players are fine.

For other connection errors, see fix "Unable to connect to world".
