Minecraft server port on Schokr: why it is not 25565
How ports work for Minecraft servers on Schokr, why server-port changes do not stick, and how to add extra ports for RCON or plugins.
Updated · 2 min read
Your Minecraft server uses the port assigned to it by Schokr, shown next to its address in the console. It is usually not 25565, so players must include the port when joining, or you can hide it behind your own domain with an SRV record.
Why not 25565?
Many servers share each machine, and only one of them can use any given port. Schokr gives each server its own port allocation instead. The default Minecraft port, 25565, is only used by a server if that happens to be its allocation.
Players connect with the address and port together:
203.0.113.10:25612
If the port is missing, Minecraft assumes 25565 and fails to connect.
Why editing server-port does not work
The server template writes your allocated port into server.properties every time the server starts:
server-port=25612
server-ip=0.0.0.0
If you change server-port to something else, it is reset on the next start. This is intentional: the server can only receive traffic on its allocated port. Leave server-ip as it is too.
Get a port-free address
To let players join with just a name, like play.example.com, use a domain you own and an SRV record. See use your own domain with an SRV record.
Adding more ports
Each server starts with one port allocation, used by Minecraft. Some features need another port:
| Feature | Needs extra port? |
|---|---|
| Normal Java players | No |
Query (enable-query) | No, it uses UDP on the game port |
| RCON | Yes. See enable RCON safely |
| Plugins with a web interface (web maps, panels) | Yes |
| Plugins that listen on their own port, such as voice chat mods | Usually yes |
Add an allocation from your server's Network section. Extra allocations cost 25 credits each, and Schokr One members get unlimited allocations. Then set the plugin's port setting to the exact number you were given. A plugin set to a port that is not allocated to your server cannot be reached from the internet.
Common mistakes
- Typing the address without the port.
- Setting a plugin to its default port (for example 8123 for a web map) instead of an allocated one.
- Using the game port for a second service, which stops the server from starting with an "address already in use" error.
