How to set up Sandbox, DarkRP or TTT on a Garry's Mod server
Change your Garry's Mod server's gamemode on Schokr: Sandbox and TTT are built in, DarkRP needs installing. Includes maps and basic settings.
Updated · 2 min read
Set the gamemode in your server's Startup settings and pick a map that suits it. Sandbox and Trouble in Terrorist Town (TTT) ship with Garry's Mod, while DarkRP has to be uploaded into the gamemodes folder first.
How gamemodes work
Every gamemode is a folder inside garrysmod/gamemodes. The folder name is what you type as the gamemode. The server loads it with the +gamemode launch option, which the Schokr template sets from a Startup variable.
| Gamemode | Folder name | Included? |
|---|---|---|
| Sandbox | sandbox | Yes |
| Trouble in Terrorist Town | terrortown | Yes |
| DarkRP | darkrp | No, install it |
Sandbox
Sandbox is the default. Set the gamemode variable to sandbox and use a building map like gm_construct or gm_flatgrass. Useful server.cfg limits:
sbox_maxprops 150
sbox_noclip 1
sbox_godmode 0
sbox_playershurtplayers 1
Trouble in Terrorist Town (TTT)
- Set the gamemode variable to
terrortown. - Set the map to a TTT map. Most TTT maps start with
ttt_, such asttt_minecraft_b5from the Workshop. Add maps through a Workshop collection. - Common settings in
server.cfg:
ttt_preptime_seconds 30
ttt_minimum_players 2
ttt_traitor_pct 0.25
ttt_detective_pct 0.13
Many TTT maps use textures from Counter-Strike: Source. Players who don't own it may see missing textures, which is a client-side issue rather than a server one.
DarkRP
DarkRP is a separate download, maintained by its developers on GitHub.
- Download DarkRP from its official GitHub repository.
- Upload the folder into
garrysmod/gamemodes/and make sure it's nameddarkrp, so you havegarrysmod/gamemodes/darkrp/gamemode/. - Download the darkrpmodification addon from the same developers and upload it into
garrysmod/addons/. This is where your custom jobs, shipments and settings go, so DarkRP updates don't overwrite your changes. - Set the gamemode variable to
darkrp. - Set the map to an RP map such as
rp_downtown_v4c_v2, added via a Workshop collection. - Restart the server.
Customize jobs, entities and settings in the darkrpmodification files, not in the darkrp folder itself.
DarkRP servers tend to run many addons. Keep an eye on memory and disk use, and remove addons you don't use.
Changing the gamemode later
- Stop the server.
- Change the gamemode variable and pick a matching map.
- Start the server.
If the map and gamemode don't match, the server loads but players spawn into a broken game, for example a TTT round with no weapons on a sandbox map.
Still stuck?
If the console says the gamemode couldn't be found, check the folder name matches exactly. Ask in the Schokr Discord if you're still stuck.
