How to create a Garry's Mod server on Schokr

Set up a free Garry's Mod dedicated server on Schokr, choose a gamemode and map, set a server name and password, and connect.

Updated · 2 min read

Create a server from the Garry's Mod template in the Schokr console, set the map, gamemode and player count in the Startup settings, add a name and passwords in server.cfg, then start it and connect from the game's console with connect.

Creating the server

  1. Sign in at console.schokr.gg.
  2. Create a new server and pick the Garry's Mod template.
  3. Choose the location nearest your players. See choosing a location.
  4. Assign memory and disk. A small Sandbox or TTT server runs comfortably on 2 GB or less, while DarkRP with many addons needs more. Leave disk space for addons and Workshop downloads.
  5. Create the server and wait for the install, which downloads the dedicated server through SteamCMD.

Startup settings

Open your server's Startup settings. The Garry's Mod template has variables for the main launch options, typically:

  • Map: the map loaded on start, such as gm_construct or gm_flatgrass.
  • Gamemode: such as sandbox or terrortown.
  • Max players
  • Workshop collection ID: see Workshop collections.
  • Steam account token: a GSLT, optional but recommended. See getting a GSLT.

Change these before the first start, then restart whenever you edit them.

Name and passwords

Open garrysmod/cfg/server.cfg in the file manager (create it if missing) and add:

hostname "My Garry's Mod Server"
sv_password ""
rcon_password "use-a-long-random-password"
sv_loadingurl ""
  • Leave sv_password empty for a public server, or set it to make players enter a password.
  • rcon_password lets you run commands remotely. See RCON tools.

More options are covered in Garry's Mod server.cfg.

Connecting

  1. Start the server and wait for the console to show that the map has loaded and the server is connected to Steam.
  2. In Garry's Mod, enable the developer console in Options, press the tilde key, and type:
connect <server-ip>:<port>

Use the IP and port shown on your Schokr console page. You can also add the address to your favourites in the server browser.

Next steps

Still stuck?

If the server stops during start-up, copy the last lines from the console into the Schokr Discord.
