How to create channels and set admins on a Mumble server
Create Mumble channels, register users and give admin rights with groups and ACLs, logged in as SuperUser on your Schokr server.
Updated · 2 min read
Log in as SuperUser, right-click a channel to add sub-channels, then register your own account and add it to the root channel's admin group. After that you can manage the server from your normal account instead of SuperUser.
Creating channels
- Connect as SuperUser. See creating a Mumble server.
- Right-click the root channel (at the top of the tree) and choose Add.
- Enter a name, an optional description, and a position (lower numbers sort higher).
- Leave Temporary unticked so the channel stays after everyone leaves.
- Click OK.
Right-click any channel to add a sub-channel inside it. Drag channels to move them, and use Edit to rename or change the description.
Channel ideas
- A Lobby or General channel for hanging out.
- Game-specific channels, each with sub-channels for teams or squads.
- An AFK channel. Mumble doesn't move idle users by itself, but you can move people there manually.
Linking channels
Linked channels let people in different channels hear each other. Join a channel, right-click another and choose Link. Useful for briefing rooms or team leaders.
Registering your own account
Day-to-day admin shouldn't use SuperUser.
- Disconnect and reconnect with your own username.
- Right-click your name and choose Register. Your account is now tied to your client certificate.
- Back up your certificate from the client's certificate wizard. If you lose it, you lose the registered account.
Making yourself an admin
- Connect as SuperUser.
- Right-click the root channel and choose Edit, then open the Groups tab.
- Select the
admingroup. - Add your registered username to the members list.
- Click OK.
By default, the root channel's ACL gives the admin group full rights across the server, including to sub-channels. Reconnect with your own account and you'll have admin powers.
Permissions with ACLs
ACLs (access control lists) on each channel decide who can enter, speak, create channels and so on. Rules are inherited from parent channels unless you turn inheritance off.
Common setups:
- Members-only channel: in the channel's ACL, deny Enter for
@all, then allow Enter for@auth(registered users) or a custom group. - Moderated channel: deny Speak for
@all, allow Speak for a group of presenters. - Prevent guests creating channels: on the root channel, deny Make Channel and Make Temporary for
@all, allow them for@auth.
Built-in groups like @all, @auth (registered users) and @in (users in the channel) help build these rules.
Tips
- Test changes with a second, unregistered client to see what guests experience.
- Make small changes and note what you did. ACLs can get confusing fast.
- Keep the SuperUser password safe even after you set up your own admin account.
Still stuck?
If you lock yourself out of a channel, log back in as SuperUser, which ignores ACLs, and fix it. Ask in the Schokr Discord for help with complex setups.
