How to set a Mumble server password, welcome text and user limit

Edit your Mumble server's ini file on Schokr to set a join password, welcome message, max users, bandwidth and root channel name.

Updated · 2 min read

Mumble's server settings live in its ini config file. Open it in the file manager, change serverpassword, welcometext, users and other options, then restart the server.

Finding the config file

Open the file manager and look in the server's main folder for the Mumble server ini file. It's usually called murmur.ini; newer Mumble server builds may name it mumble-server.ini. Lines starting with ; are comments, and many options are commented out by default.

Some values, like the port, are set by the template from your Startup settings. Leave those alone in the ini file.

Common settings

; Password required to join. Leave empty for a public server.
serverpassword=MyGroupPassword

; Message shown to users when they connect. Basic HTML is allowed.
welcometext="Welcome to our Mumble server!<br />Be nice and have fun."

; Maximum number of users at once
users=50

; Maximum bandwidth per user, in bits per second
bandwidth=72000

; Name of the root channel at the top of the tree
registerName=My Community

; Allow HTML in messages and comments
allowhtml=true
SettingWhat it does
serverpasswordPassword everyone must enter to connect
welcometextMessage shown on join
usersMaximum simultaneous users
bandwidthPer-user audio bandwidth cap in bits per second
registerNameName of the root channel
textmessagelengthMaximum characters in a text message
allowhtmlWhether HTML is allowed in messages

Make sure each setting appears only once and isn't commented out with ;.

Applying changes

  1. Stop the server.
  2. Edit and save the ini file.
  3. Start the server.

Check the console for warnings about invalid values.

Server password vs registered users

A server password keeps strangers out, but everyone shares it. For better control:

  • Leave serverpassword set while you're getting started.
  • Have your regular members register their usernames (right-click yourself and choose Register in the client).
  • Use channel permissions (ACLs) to restrict what unregistered users can do. See Mumble channels and permissions.

Bandwidth and audio quality

Higher bandwidth allows better audio quality settings in clients but uses more network. The default is fine for most groups. If users report audio cutting out, they may have their client quality set above the server's limit.

Public listing

Mumble can register in its public server list using the registerName, registerUrl, registerHostname and registerPassword options. Leave these unset unless you want strangers to find your server.

Still stuck?

If a change has no effect, check you edited the ini file that the server actually loads, which is listed in the console at startup. Ask in the Schokr Discord if you're unsure.
