How to create a Mumble server and log in as SuperUser

Set up a free Mumble voice server on Schokr, find the SuperUser password in the console on first start, and connect as the server admin.

Updated · 2 min read

Create a server from the Mumble template, start it, and copy the SuperUser password that appears in the console on first start. Then connect with the Mumble client using the username SuperUser and that password to manage channels and permissions.

Creating the server

  1. Sign in at console.schokr.gg.
  2. Create a new server with the Mumble template.
  3. Pick the location closest to your group. Voice is very sensitive to latency. See choosing a location.
  4. Assign resources. Mumble is extremely light; a small amount of memory and disk is plenty, so most of your pool stays free for other servers.
  5. Create the server and wait for the install.

Mumble uses a single port for both TCP and UDP, so the one allocation every Schokr server starts with is all you need.

Getting the SuperUser password

SuperUser is Mumble's built-in admin account. It can do anything on the server.

  1. Start the server.
  2. Watch the console on the first start. Mumble's server prints a line saying the password for SuperUser has been set, followed by the password.
  3. Copy it somewhere safe.

If you missed it, scroll back through the console or check the server's log file in the file manager. If it's lost entirely, ask in the Schokr Discord; the password can be reset with the server's -supw option, which depends on what your template allows.

Connecting as SuperUser

  1. Install the Mumble client from mumble.info.
  2. Add a server with:
    • Address: <server-ip>
    • Port: your server's port
    • Username: SuperUser
  3. Connect, and enter the SuperUser password when asked.

Use SuperUser to set things up, then do day-to-day admin from your own registered account. See Mumble channels and permissions.

Connecting as a normal user

Everyone else adds the same address and port with their own username. If you set a server password, they enter it when connecting.

Still stuck?

If the client can't connect, double-check the port matches the one on your Schokr console page, then ask in the Schokr Discord.
