How to install Oxide (uMod) plugins on a Rust server
Install the Oxide/uMod framework on your Schokr Rust server, add .cs plugins, edit their configs and grant permissions.

Install the Oxide (uMod) framework on your Rust server, restart, then drop plugin .cs files into the oxide/plugins folder. Oxide compiles and loads them automatically.
Step 1: install Oxide
Check your server's Startup settings first. Some Rust templates include a variable to enable Oxide/uMod (or a modding framework option). If yours does, turn it on and restart. The server will download and install Oxide on boot.
If there's no such variable, install it manually:
- Stop the server.
- Download the Linux build of Oxide for Rust from umod.org. It's a zip file.
- In the file manager, upload the zip to the server's root folder (the one that contains
RustDedicated_Data). - Extract it there, letting it overwrite existing files.
- Start the server.
When Oxide loads, the console shows Oxide messages during startup and an oxide folder appears in the server root with plugins, config, data, lang and logs inside.
To confirm, type this in the console:
oxide.version
Step 2: add plugins
- Find a plugin on umod.org/plugins and download its
.csfile. - Upload it to
oxide/pluginsin the file manager. - Oxide notices new files and loads them within a few seconds. No restart needed.
The console shows "Loaded plugin" on success, or a compile error if something is wrong.
Step 3: configure plugins
Most plugins create a config file in oxide/config the first time they load, named after the plugin, for example oxide/config/Kits.json. Edit it in the file manager, then reload the plugin:
oxide.reload Kits
Invalid JSON is the most common reason a config reset or plugin failed to load. Watch for missing commas and quotes.
Step 4: permissions
Oxide has its own permission system. Plugins list their permissions on their uMod page. Grant them to a player or a group:
oxide.grant user PlayerName kits.use
oxide.grant group default kits.use
oxide.grant group admin kits.admin
oxide.usergroup add PlayerName admin
Useful commands:
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
oxide.load Name | Load a plugin |
oxide.unload Name | Unload a plugin |
oxide.reload Name | Reload after editing its config |
oxide.plugins | List loaded plugins |
oxide.show user PlayerName | Show a player's groups and permissions |
After Rust updates
Every Rust update replaces the server files and removes Oxide. Until Oxide is reinstalled with a version built for the new Rust update, plugins won't load. After the monthly update, wait for the matching Oxide release on uMod, then reinstall (or restart, if your template installs Oxide automatically).
Tips
- Install a few plugins at a time so you know which one causes problems.
- Plugins use memory. On a tight resource pool, avoid large plugin packs.
- Remove a plugin by deleting its
.csfile. Its config and data stay unless you delete them too.
Still stuck?
Copy the compile error from the console and ask in the Schokr Discord.
