Download the Linux builds of Metamod:Source and SourceMod, extract both into your game folder (csgo or tf), restart, and add your SteamID to admins_simple.ini. SourceMod needs Metamod to load, so install Metamod first.
Which games this covers
SourceMod supports most Source games, including CS:GO, Team Fortress 2, Counter-Strike: Source, Day of Defeat: Source, Half-Life 2: Deathmatch and Left 4 Dead 2. It does not support Garry's Mod, which uses Lua addons instead. For Garry's Mod admin, see ULX and ULib.
Step 1: download
- Get the latest stable Linux build of Metamod:Source from metamodsource.net.
- Get the latest stable Linux build of SourceMod from sourcemod.net.
Both are .tar.gz files. Each contains an addons folder, and SourceMod also contains a cfg folder.
Step 2: upload and extract
- Stop the server.
- In the file manager, open your game folder:
csgo/for CS:GO ortf/for TF2. - Upload the Metamod archive there and extract it. You should now have
addons/metamod/andaddons/metamod.vdf. - Upload the SourceMod archive to the same folder and extract it. You should now have
addons/sourcemod/andcfg/sourcemod/. - Delete the uploaded archives to save disk.
Step 3: check it loaded
Start the server and type in the console:
meta version
sm version
If meta is an unknown command, Metamod isn't loading, usually because it's in the wrong folder. If meta works but sm doesn't, run meta list to see whether SourceMod failed and why.
Step 4: make yourself admin
Edit addons/sourcemod/configs/admins_simple.ini and add a line with your SteamID and flags:
"STEAM_1:1:12345678" "99:z"
zgives root access, every permission.99is the immunity level, so lower admins can't target you.
CS:GO and TF2 use slightly different SteamID formats in status output. SourceMod accepts STEAM_0: and STEAM_1: forms, and also the [U:1:...] form.
Reconnect, then type sm_admin in your game console or !admin in chat to open the admin menu.
Step 5: install plugins
- Download a plugin's compiled
.smxfile, typically from the AlliedModders forums. - Upload it to
addons/sourcemod/plugins/. - Load it without restarting:
sm plugins load pluginname
Plugin configs usually appear in cfg/sourcemod/ after the first load. Some plugins also need extra files such as translations in addons/sourcemod/translations/ or gamedata; follow each plugin's instructions.
Useful commands
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
sm plugins list | Show loaded plugins |
sm plugins reload name | Reload a plugin |
sm_kick name | Kick a player |
sm_ban name minutes reason | Ban a player |
sm_map mapname | Change map |
sm_rcon command | Run a server command |
After game updates
Valve updates can break SourceMod or Metamod until new builds are released. If the server crashes or plugins stop loading after an update, download the latest builds and repeat step 2. Your configs and admins are kept.
