Backups vs snapshots on Schokr: what's the difference?
Schokr servers have both backups and snapshots. Compare limits, automatic daily snapshots and which to use before risky changes.
Updated · 2 min read
Backups and snapshots both save a copy of your server's files so you can roll back if something goes wrong. The main differences are how many you get, whether they can run automatically every day and how you add more.
Quick comparison
| Backups | Snapshots | |
|---|---|---|
| Included per server | A limited number | 3 slots |
| More slots | Check your Backups section for your limit | 40 credits each, up to 30 per server |
| Automatic daily | No (but schedules can create backups) | Yes, 5 credits per day |
| With Schokr One | Limited per server | Unlimited snapshots |
| Managed in | Backups section | Snapshots section |
When to use a snapshot
Snapshots are the main way to protect your server on Schokr. Use one:
- Before updating Minecraft, a game, plugins or mods
- Before changing the software version in Startup settings
- Before deleting or replacing world folders
- Before letting a new team member make big changes
- Every day, automatically, for servers you care about

When to use a backup
Backups are useful as extra restore points on top of your snapshots. Because a schedule task can create a backup, you can combine them with schedules for timed copies without spending credits. The number of backups per server is limited, so delete old ones you no longer need.
Off-server copies
Neither backups nor snapshots replace a copy you keep yourself. For anything you cannot afford to lose, such as a world you have played on for months, occasionally archive the important folders in the file manager and download the archive to your own computer.
A simple protection plan
- Turn on automatic daily snapshots for your main server.
- Take a manual snapshot before every risky change.
- Download an archive of your world or data now and then.
- Delete restore points you no longer need, so slots are free when you need them.
What restoring does
Restoring replaces your server's current files with the saved copy. Anything created after that point, such as player progress since the snapshot, is lost. If you are not sure which point to restore, take a fresh snapshot of the current state first so you can come back to it.
Permissions
Backups and snapshots are separate team permissions. Only give restore and delete access to people you trust, since a restore overwrites the live server. See team roles and permissions.
