TeamSpeak file transfers, avatars and icons not working

Fix TeamSpeak 3 uploads, downloads, avatars and channel icons on Schokr by adding a file transfer port and setting it in your Startup settings.

Updated · 2 min read

TeamSpeak 3 sends files over a separate TCP port from voice. If avatars, server icons, banners or the file browser fail, add a port allocation for file transfers and set it as the file transfer port in your Startup settings, then restart.

Why it happens

Voice uses your server's main port over UDP. File transfers use another port over TCP, which is 30033 by default on a home server. Every Schokr server starts with one allocation, which goes to voice, so file transfers have no port until you add one.

Things that depend on file transfers:

  • Uploading and downloading files in channels
  • User avatars
  • Server and channel icons
  • Server banners uploaded to the server

Fixing it

  1. Open your TeamSpeak server in the Schokr console.
  2. Go to the Network section and add a new allocation. This costs 25 credits, or is free with Schokr One.
  3. Note the port number you're given.
  4. Open your Startup settings and set the file transfer port variable to that number.
  5. Restart the server.

The console shows the file transfer port TeamSpeak is listening on when it starts. Check it matches.

See adding port allocations for more detail.

Testing

  1. Reconnect with your TeamSpeak client.
  2. Set an avatar in your client, or right-click a channel and open its file browser.
  3. Upload a small file.

If it works, everyone else will see avatars and icons too once they reconnect.

Still failing?

  • Port mismatch: the number in the Startup variable must exactly match an allocation on this server.
  • Permissions: uploading needs permission. Guests often can't upload by default. Check the server group's file transfer permissions in the Permissions editor, such as the upload and download quota and the permissions to browse and upload files.
  • Quota: TeamSpeak has upload and download quotas per server and per group. A quota of 0 blocks transfers.
  • Disk: uploaded files are stored on your server's disk. If the disk is full, uploads fail.

Do you need file transfers at all?

No. Voice and text chat work perfectly without them. If you don't want to spend credits on another port, you can skip it and just live without avatars and icons, or use a server banner hosted on an external website, which is set by URL in the server settings.

Still stuck?

Post the file transfer line from your startup log in the Schokr Discord.
